Replacing 400W metal halide with LED
A 400W metal-halide fixture should not be replaced by choosing an LED fixture solely from an advertised wattage-equivalent label. The useful comparison is the required light at the work surface or site, together with optical distribution, mounting height, voltage, controls, environment, and the lumen performance of the candidate LED product.
Specifications to compare
- Existing fixture and lamp type
- Input voltage
- Existing and target lumen output
- Fixture distribution or beam pattern
- Mounting height
- Color temperature
- Dimming or control requirements
- Wet/damp location and temperature ratings
- Mounting and physical dimensions
Common 400W metal-halide applications
Common applications include warehouse high bays, exterior wall packs, area lighting, parking lots, and other commercial spaces. The correct LED approach may be a lamp replacement, retrofit, or full fixture replacement depending on the existing equipment and application.
