HID to LED Replacement Guide

A specification-first approach to replacing HID lamps and fixtures with LED products.

Published by: Bright Concepts LightingUpdated: August 24, 2026

Do not replace HID lighting by watts alone

When moving from HID to LED, the correct replacement is determined by the application and required light output—not by selecting an LED product with the same wattage. LED products can deliver different lumen output, optical distribution, and delivered light at a much lower input wattage.

Specifications to compare

  • Existing lamp or fixture type
  • Input voltage
  • Existing and target lumen output
  • Beam/distribution requirements
  • Mounting height and application
  • Color temperature
  • Dimming or control requirements
  • Environmental rating
  • Fixture dimensions and mounting
For fixture conversions: verify electrical and installation requirements in the manufacturer documentation and use qualified personnel where required.

Common applications

HID-to-LED replacement decisions often arise in wall packs, high bays, area lighting, parking lots, and other commercial applications. Search by the existing manufacturer SKU when possible, then compare the replacement specification rather than wattage alone.
