PAR20 vs PAR30 vs PAR38

Compare PAR20, PAR30, and PAR38 lamp sizes and the technical specifications that matter for replacement selection.

Published by: Bright Concepts LightingUpdated: September 14, 2026

What does PAR mean?

PAR lamps are directional reflector lamps. The number in a PAR designation relates to lamp diameter in eighths of an inch, so the designation is useful when comparing physical size.

PAR20 vs PAR30 vs PAR38

PAR20 is the smaller format, PAR30 is larger, and PAR38 is larger again. Physical size is only one part of replacement selection: base type, voltage, beam angle, lumen output, color temperature, dimming, and fixture fit must also be verified.

Do not substitute by size alone: two PAR lamps of the same nominal size can have very different beam angles, lumen output, electrical requirements, and application ratings.
