What color temperature means
Correlated color temperature (CCT) describes the appearance of white light and is expressed in kelvin. Lower values generally appear warmer; higher values generally appear cooler. CCT does not describe light output, color rendering, or energy use by itself.
Common commercial choices
- 3000K: warmer appearance used in hospitality, residential-adjacent, and selected commercial spaces.
- 3500K: neutral-warm option used in many offices and commercial interiors.
- 4000K: neutral-cool appearance commonly used in offices, retail, service, and general commercial spaces.
- 5000K: cooler appearance often selected for warehouses, service areas, exterior applications, and spaces where that appearance is desired.
Maintaining consistency
When replacing only part of an existing installation, matching the existing CCT can help avoid visibly mixed lighting. Also verify lumen output, CRI, distribution, and dimming rather than matching CCT alone.
